The Fairhaven United Methodist Church building was designated as a historic landmark by the city of Pittsburgh in 2013. It was only the second building in the South Hills of Pittsburgh to be so designated.
This edition of the book examines the origins of the church more thoroughly than the first edition. It uncovers the true story of Methodism coming to the village of Fairhaven, now the Overbrook section of Pittsburgh. That story is more complicated than previously thought and culminated in a power struggle between proponents of the Methodist Protestant and Methodist Episcopal Church.
The book explores how the church exemplifies the features of coal patch towns like Fairhaven and examines the historic fabric of the building that houses this church. The book contains rare photographs of all the ministers who have served the Fairhaven United Methodist Church, photographs that the Western Pennsylvania Methodist Conference does not have. Additionally, there are photographs of over 200 individuals from the church’s membership between 1881 through 1921.
The history of Fairhaven United Methodist Church serves as a microcosm of western Pennsylvania’s transformation from an agrarian to an industrial economy. The church's history also documents the changing role of religion in American culture and how it has changed over the last 145 years.
