The search for ancestors who came from Germany differs in many ways from the process one undertakes when looking for ancestors whose origins are in Great Britain. Family historians searching for their German forebears need to understand issues related to German naming practices, Gothic script, typefaces, language, dictionaries and records that can be found in the U.S. and Germany. This book explores in some detail the aforementioned issues as well as original sources of information such as church records and published works like lineage books and German family archives otherwise known as Deutsches Familienarchiv. Genealogists searching for their immigrant ancestor’s place of origin in Germany either in the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries will discover some useful strategies for finding those ancestors in Germany. This work covers additional unexplored sources available in the United States namely Ahnentafelm available on microfilm at the National Archives in Washington.
