Identification of American Soldiers Buried in Temporary Cemetery of Grand-Failly, France - 1944-1948

Identification of American Soldiers Buried in Temporary Cemetery of Grand-Failly, France - 1944-1948 Compiler: Donna M. Knechtel Paszek

This book identifies 2,967 American soldiers who were buried in a temporary cemetery in Grand Failly, France in World War II. During the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, the United States Army was faced with the daunting task of burying those who perished.

One of the locations chosen was the small village of Grand-Failly 53 miles south of Bastogne. The cemetery opened on December 20, 1944 just 4 days after the beginning of the Bulge offensive. It was operated and maintained by the US Government, however, citizens of the town helped tend the graves.

In 1948 the decision was made to relocate the fallen and they were reinterred in private and national cemeteries in the United States and in military cemeteries in Europe. Citizens of Grand Failly and nearby towns erected a monument in 1985 on the site to honor those who died in defense of their country. To this day they continue to hold memorial services at least 3 times a year but they never had the names. This book was written to give them the identities of those who were buried there. An alphabetical list of the deceased soldiers, it includes their rank, serial number, state, date of death, current cemetery and more.
