Chapter 3 traces “The Ancestry of Philena Alvena Chute” of Carbon Hill, Hocking Co., OH (1879- 1949). This book is a continuation of the Thorne Family History series; the first volume, published in 2011, encompassed Chapter 1, “Descendants of David Thorn (abt 1783- 1815)” and Chapter 2, “The Ancestry of Sarah Helen McKibben (1840- 1921)”.
Philena Alvena Chute was the second youngest of twelve children of Andrew Hossom Chute (1812- 1893) by his 2nd wife, Louisa Jane Robinson (1838- 1918). Additionally, she had 6 step-siblings from the 1st wife of Andrew Hossom Chute, Almira B. Phillips (1818- 1854).
Philena Alvena Chute married Cyrus Lincoln Thorne (1866- 1948) and had twelve children, all born at Carbon Hill, Hocking Co., OH. They divorced sometime after 1920 and before 17 Oct 1924 when she married 2nd to John Wesley Tigner (1886- 1958). She died 15 Jun 1949 at Columbus, Franklin Co., OH and is buried with her 2nd husband at Sunset Cemetery, Galloway, Franklin Co., OH.
The ancestry of Philena Alvena Chute includes four pre-1821 residents of Ohio recognized by First Families of Ohio, Ohio Genealogical Society. It also includes direct lineage to two Revolutionary War soldiers, both recognized by DAR and SAR. Prominent immigrant ancestors who came to Colonial Massachusetts in the 17th century include Samuel Richardson (1602- 1658), Francis Wyman (1619- 1699), Thomas Wilmarth (ca. 1620- 1694), Pentecost Blackinton, Sr. (ca. 1688- 1714/15), and John Whipple (ca. 1617- 1685). The latter removed to Providence, RI, following the famous Protestant theologian Roger Williams (ca. 1603- 1683), and was progenitor of a large Whipple clan.
The ahnentafel format is followed, but amended to encompass the entire (known) family of each direct ancestor. The text is extensively referenced and includes both a bibliography and surname index.
