…of People from the Pine Grove Area, Schuylkill County PA – It is an alphabetical covering the period 1939 through 1949. These newspaper clippings were typed from a scrapbook compilation of the original obituaries. It is not a complete listing of all obits but includes a selection of people known to the original compiler, a member of the Herring family (a very common name in that area) not only for her family but for church and other friends she knew.
The majority of the clippings were taken from the Pine Grove Herald and the Pottsville Republican as well as other local papers of the time. Articles name the parents and the maternal maiden names as well as listings of children and other details about the deceased. Do not let the late dates fool you. Many of the listings include people born in the mid to late 1800s including names of parents, grandparents, etc. depending on the obit.
Sample Obituary: Mrs. Wm. N. Bachert October 1, 1941 Mrs. Katie Bachert, 54, nee Smith, wife of Wm. N. Bachert, died suddenly at 5 o’clock, Wednesday morning, at her home on Avenue D. Fairmount Schuylkill Haven. Mrs. Bachert was stricken with a heart attack at her home during the evening Tuesday. She was born in Pine Grove Township, a daughter of the late George and Clara, nee Singley, Smith and lived in Schuylkill Haven, for years. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. To survive besides her husband there are these children; Mary wife of Lester Strause, Reading; Anna, Chas, Helen, Clara, Grace and Aaron at home; and Leroy of Pine Grove. There are also four grandchildren; and these brothers and sisters: Mahlon, Ralph, George, Charles and Levi Smith, Pine Grove Township; Mrs. Grace Dewald and Miss Katherine Smith, Pine Grove; and Mrs. George Cooper, Berks County.
