African American Deaths in “Afro-American Notes” of the Pittsburgh Press is a record of deaths of some of the earlier settlers in Pittsburgh.  Many of these deaths do not appear in any local newspaper, so they are extremely important to those researching their ancestors.  Some provide an origin of birth and occupation for many of those listed in the book.  They also provide the names of surviving family members and those who attended the funeral.  Often times, a cause of death is included in the death notice and a place of burial.  These records are an invaluable resource for anyone doing research in the Pittsburgh area.
