African American Marriages in the "Afro-American Notes" of the Pittsburgh Press, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Oct. 26 1896-June 15, 1930

Compiled by Marlene Garrett Bransom

African American Marriages in the “Afro-American Notes” of the Pittsburgh Press is a record of marriages of some of the earliest settlers in Pittsburgh.  Many of these marriages are quite explicit detailing the time and place of the wedding and all the parties who were involved.  The names of those in attendance are important because they show relationships between families.  The description of the how the bride and groom and their attendants were dressed makes the reader feel that they were viewing the wedding firsthand.  After the details of the wedding, we are then told where the newlyweds would be residing.  Although some marriage announcements are more explicit than others, they help create a history of the early settlers that we would not find anywhere else.
