The Historical and Biographical Annals by Montgomery is considered by many to be the essential starting point for Berks County genealogical research. The Annals updates the 1886 History by Montgomery. But the strength of this work is not the history section, but rather the 4,000 or more extensive family biographies. A typical biography will not only list the parents and grandparents along with the children and spouse of the subject but also the type of life the subject lived. Oftentimes the immigrant ancestor is identified along with the country of origin.
Additional attention has been given to the "First Families" of the county in the chapter on local Reunions and Family Associations. Well over 50,000 county residents are mentioned in this work between the historical and biographical sections. Includes volumes I and II as well as a Berks Co. map.
