As the title implies, these records contain the abstracts of the Presbyterian Advocate and the early years of the Presbyterian Banner. Printed by Rev. Annin (Annan), this newspaper was one of the earliest records printed for the Western Frontier. It was widely distributed among the “49-ers” and others going out west to seek their fame and fortune. In 1846 Annin bought another Presbyterian newspaper called the Herald of the West which combined with the Presbyterian Banner and Advocate rolled off the presses at their new location at Fifth Street above Smithfield Street in the heart of the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
