This original book is a neat surprise. It took the efforts of many to produce a Military records book, the first of its kind for Crawford County. Robert Gobrecht from the Veteran’s Office at the Courthouse provided over 7000 burial records giving much detail (the war, date of death, cemetery buried in, section, row, lot, grave and funeral home, when known)! The burials are often outside the county helping researchers greatly! He also supplied about 20 pages of Final Benefits and Discharge records from courthouse findings. Patricia Ellis secured records on the Morris Post in Galion, OH covering ca 17 pages of Civil War stories written by a member of the Post and extremely interesting to researchers. Pages have been copied from the rare book Hardesty Military History of OH pertaining to Crawford Co. Civil War veterans.
Dr. Bernard Mansfield of Galion has written a series of stories for The Galion Inquirer, included in the book. The Tiro World, no longer in existence, had many letters written to Carl Baker, the Editor, and Joyce Von Stein rescued some of them for this book consisting of about 20 pages typed by Marty Keller. There are sections on the Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican, Spanish, Finley Guard, Pensioners, WWI, Prisoners, and Indigent. The odd accumulation of military records offerings were in desperate need of retyping which was done by Winnie Kleinknecht. The index was painstakingly compiled by Stanley Ellis to make your research easier. The 7000 burials are already self indexed in the first section, and several other sections, but the many records we have were never previously indexed thus difficult to use.
