This CD contains several books pertaining to the history and people of Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The section related to Somerset County from the
1906 History of Bedford and Somerset Counties and the
1884 History of Bedford, Somerset & Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania: with illustrations and biographical sketches of some of its pioneers and prominent men are included on this CD.
The 1884 Bedford, Somerset and Fulton County History contains early lists of Somerset County taxpayers. The lists are organized by towns and townships and include taxpayers from the following years 1796, 1800, 1807, 1814, 1839 and 1854.
Both the 1884 and 1906 county histories have extensive lists of Civil War soldiers and brief regimental histories. The List of Deserters and non-reporting Drafted Men for the time period 1863-64 is an interesting publication and can offer genealogy researcher clues to Somerset County family migration patterns. Oftentimes drafted men were no longer Somerset County residents but were still listed as non-reporting. These men were typically recorded as either enlisted in another regiment or moved to another state or county. The new state or county of residence was typically listed.
